Lineker Identifies Fernandes as Premier League Standout
Gary Lineker has labeled Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as his player of the season following the midfielder’s influential display in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. The Old Trafford fixture saw the hosts recover from a Maxence Lacroix header to take all three points, largely thanks to the Portuguese international’s creative output.
Fernandes converted a penalty in the 57th minute after Lacroix was dismissed for a foul on Matheus Cunha. Seven minutes later, Fernandes provided a cross for Benjamin Sesko to head home the winner. “You see him on the left wing, you see him on the right wing… what a brain! I think he’s the player of the season for me,” Lineker noted on The Rest Is Football podcast. “He was still the standout player even when they were going through a rotten spell when they were really struggling under Ruben Amorim.”

Micah Richards echoed the sentiment, highlighting how Fernandes manipulates space to dictate play. Despite a slow start for United, Richards observed that the captain’s ability to scan the pitch and find the inside-left channel changed the momentum. For Richards, Fernandes remains one of the most consistent performers in the league regardless of the managerial situation.
While Lineker views Fernandes as the frontrunner, he suggested that Declan Rice or Erling Haaland could challenge for the individual accolade if Arsenal or Manchester City secure the title. The current form of the United skipper, however, puts him at the top of the analyst’s list.
