Sabonis Sidelined Until Mid-January
The Sacramento Kings will be without Domantas Sabonis for another four to five weeks due to a partial meniscus tear in his left knee. The team confirmed the timeline on Friday, extending an absence that began November 16. Since then, Sacramento has won just three of thirteen games.
Initially labeled as knee soreness, further tests revealed the more serious injury. Sources close to the team emphasize a “full recovery” as the priority, signaling no rush to return their star center.
A Season of Setbacks
Sabonis’ 2024/25 campaign has been plagued by injuries. A preseason hamstring strain delayed his debut, followed by a rib issue in early November. This latest setback marks a rare disruption for a player who averaged 79, 82, and 70 games over the past three seasons.
Kings Struggle Without Their Anchor
Sacramento’s 6–21 record places them near the bottom of the Western Conference. While Sabonis’ absence isn’t the sole issue, his impact is undeniable. The team lacks defensive consistency, late-game execution, and offensive identity without him.
“Domantas is our reference point,” a team staff member previously stated.
His ability to dominate the post, control the boards, and facilitate offense has been sorely missed. The Kings’ system was built around his versatility, and his absence has exposed existing weaknesses.
Raynaud Steps Up Amid Struggles
One bright spot has been rookie Maxime Raynaud. Since Sabonis’ injury, the French center has averaged 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. Over the last eight games, those numbers have jumped to 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds.
While not a long-term replacement, Raynaud’s growth offers a silver lining in an otherwise difficult season.
Looking Ahead
The Kings face a critical decision: wait for Sabonis’ return or consider broader changes. Rushing his recovery would risk further setbacks, especially for a player whose game relies on physicality.
His eventual return will shape not just the standings but the trajectory of Sacramento’s season.
