If the Sacramento Kings decide to pull the plug and initiate a rebuild, their biggest trade asset is clear: All-Star center Domantas Sabonis. His elite playmaking, rebounding, and interior scoring make him one of the most valuable bigs on the market — and several franchises would immediately enter the bidding war.
Sports Illustrated’s Blake Silverman recently highlighted three teams capable of landing Sabonis. Two of them, interestingly, come from California, and all three deals involve the combination every rebuilding team craves: young players plus draft capital. So what could these trades look like, and why would they matter?
Golden State Warriors (7–6)

Kings receive: Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Buddy Hield, a 2026 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and a 2028 first-round pick.
Why It Works
Golden State is still operating in a championship-or-bust window. Pairing Sabonis with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler would immediately strengthen their frontcourt and add the type of all-around engine they haven’t had since prime Draymond. His rebounding and passing would give the Warriors a new tactical dimension — and if you’re betting on experience, this move screams aggression and ambition.
Los Angeles Clippers (3–8)

Kings receive: John Collins, Bogdan Bogdanović, Bradley Beal, a 2027 first-round pick (swap rights), and a 2029 first-round pick (top-three protected, swap rights).

Why It Works
The Clippers are loaded with veterans and desperate to reverse a rough start. Adding Sabonis to a core of James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Ivica Zubac gives them a stabilizing interior presence and a high-IQ offensive connector. The expiring deals help match salary, the picks give Sacramento future flexibility, and the move would signal that LA is still pushing for relevance instead of drifting into mediocrity.
Detroit Pistons (10–2)

Why It Works
The Pistons are off to a stunning start, and adding Sabonis would give their young group the proven veteran anchor it needs. Imagine Sabonis playing alongside Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson. That’s the kind of lineup that accelerates a rebuild and pushes a franchise into playoff contention sooner than expected.
Are the Kings Really Heading Toward a Rebuild?
The Kings have stumbled out of the gate at 3–9, riding a four-game losing streak capped by a painful 133–100 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Head coach Doug Christie didn’t hold back afterward:
“Not f**king embarrassed, excuse me. Unacceptable. Period. It just is.”
He even added that at 55, he felt he could have suited up and delivered a better performance. When a coach speaks that directly, it usually signals deeper issues — and the type of cracks that precede major organizational decisions.
If Sacramento does decide to reset, Sabonis will be the first domino. And whichever team lands him could dramatically alter the NBA’s balance of power.
