Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone remains unfazed by the growing debate around LaLiga’s proposal to stage a regular-season match in Miami. While rivals Real Madrid have firmly rejected the move, Simeone made it clear: he has bigger priorities.
“We’re always worrying about things that often don’t end up happening. We wear ourselves out over things that don’t happen,” Simeone told reporters on Saturday, ahead of Atletico’s LaLiga opener against Espanyol.
The proposal, which involves shifting the high-profile December clash between Barcelona and Villarreal to the United States, was recently approved by the Spanish football federation. Still, it awaits the green light from UEFA, US Soccer, CONCACAF, and FIFA.
For Simeone, focus lies on the pitch. After finishing third last season, Atletico have splashed over €150 million in the summer transfer window, signalling clear intent to reclaim the league title they last won in 2021.
“You always have to evolve. The team must continue to grow at the same pace as the club,” said the Argentine, who is entering his 14th season in charge of Los Rojiblancos and has already lifted two LaLiga titles during his tenure.
Among the fresh faces at the Wanda Metropolitano are Alex Baena, David Hancko, Johnny Cardozo, and Thiago Almada. Simeone isn’t shying away from tweaking his tactical setup to integrate the new arrivals.
“Changes are always good as long as they respond to what is needed. I don’t know if the word is change—I would say improve,” he explained.
Versatile attacker Baena, who impressed on the left flank for Villarreal, is being considered for a new role closer to goal. “He’s done very well and may start there in that position. Where I see him least is as a winger. We understand that it’s better to continue along these lines,” added Simeone.
As Atletico Madrid prepares to kick off their campaign, Simeone’s message is crystal clear: tune out the distractions, focus on evolution, and let the performances do the talking. Whether in Madrid or Miami, it’s all about proving it on the pitch.
