Manchester United are finalizing the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth £60million plus £5million in add-ons, with the 22-year-old midfielder representing the club’s most expensive acquisition of the summer.
Baleba was a long-term target for the Reds, though Brighton’s £100million valuation last summer temporarily shut down any deal. A dip in form and a recent injury brought that asking price down significantly, allowing United to push through the transfer. The deal follows midfield arrivals Andrey Santos (£50m) and Youri Tielemans (£35m), continuing a systematic rebuild of the engine room — a strategy that mirrors last summer’s triple forward acquisition of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
Left-Back Gap Demands Immediate Action
With the transfer window closing September 1, director of football Jason Wilcox must shift focus to one remaining priority: a left-back. Luke Shaw, 31, cannot be expected to carry the full load across the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League. Young option Harry Amass is reportedly set to depart, either on loan or permanently, which makes the position even more exposed.
The primary target is Newcastle United‘s Lewis Hall. The 21-year-old is among the most highly-rated full-backs in the league and is contracted at Newcastle until June 2029, which has led to a reported valuation of £60–70million. Newcastle’s hierarchy has publicly declared Hall untouchable, refusing to entertain offers.
That stance carries limited weight given recent precedent. Newcastle made identical claims about Alexander Isak last summer and Bruno Guimaraes earlier this month — both players left, for Liverpool and Arsenal respectively. A significant bid from United, combined with the player’s own desire to play Champions League football, could shift the equation. With Newcastle missing European competition and having lost Howe, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Guimaraes in quick succession, the club’s appeal as a destination is diminishing.
Fallback Options Are in Place
Club Brugge hold a firm line on their own left-back target Joaquin Seys, though an offer exceeding his £30million valuation may prove difficult to reject. United have also identified a second alternative.
Reports from Spain indicate United are very serious about Racing Santander‘s Jorge Salinas, 19, as a contingency. The teenager impressed at the Under-19 European Championship and carries a €16million (£13.7m) release clause. Barcelona are also monitoring Salinas, which adds urgency to any potential move.
Left-Back Is Non-Negotiable
- Hall is the preferred target at an estimated £60–70m
- Seys at Club Brugge offers a mid-range alternative around £30m
- Salinas provides a low-cost option at £13.7m via release clause

Regardless of which route United pursue, the position must be filled. A single injury to Shaw leaves the squad structurally vulnerable and threatens to derail the project before it gains momentum. Stay with TipsGG for full coverage of United’s transfer activity as the window approaches its deadline.
