Could the Afcon Final Be Sadio Mane's Last Dance with Senegal?

18.01.2026, 06:43

From Bambali to the Big Stage

For Sadio Mane, the journey began in Bambali, a small town in south-west Senegal. It was there, on red earth-lined streets and sandy pitches, that he first kicked a football. At just 13 years old, he watched Liverpool‘s legendary comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final. Little did he know, he would one day lift that very trophy himself.

Mane’s career has since soared to incredible heights. He has won the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool, and in 2021, he led Senegal to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title. That victory, sealed by his winning penalty against Egypt, was, in his words, “the best day of my life and the best trophy of my life.”

His contributions to Senegalese football were further honored when a stadium in Sedhiou, near his hometown, was named after him. Now, as Senegal prepares to face Morocco in the Afcon final on Sunday in Rabat, Mane stands on the brink of another historic achievement—and possibly his final bow in the tournament.

A Legend’s Potential Farewell

Mane has hinted that this could be his last Afcon. “A final is meant to be won,” he said after scoring the decisive goal in the semifinal against Egypt. “I will be very happy to play my last Afcon final, to enjoy it and to make my country win.”

His teammates, however, are not ready to let him go. Pape Gueye, Senegal’s midfielder, expressed the squad’s desire to convince Mane to stay for the 2027 edition. “We’re going to try to keep him with us a bit longer, because he still has some great years to give,” Gueye told BBC Afrique. “He’s a legend of Senegal, and we want him to stay with us for many more years.”

At 33, Mane now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, but his legacy in Senegal remains unshaken. His humility and generosity have endeared him to his people. In Bambali, he has funded the construction of a hospital, schools, and mosques, and even sent 300 Liverpool shirts to his hometown before the 2018 Champions League final.

“If Sadio comes here, he behaves very humbly, on a level with the people in Bambali. He doesn’t want to stand out. The village gives all this love back to him.”

— Fode Boucar Dahaba, president of a regional league

His acts of kindness extend beyond Senegal. During his time at Liverpool, he was known to help clean toilets at a mosque in Toxteth after matches, always choosing to remain discreet.

The Heart of Senegal’s Success

Mane is Senegal’s record goalscorer with 53 goals in over 120 appearances. His leadership, both on and off the pitch, has been instrumental in the team’s success. Moussa Niakhate, Senegal’s center-back, described him as “an incredible man” and a figure who represents the hopes of African football.

His influence was evident in the semifinal against Egypt, where his 78th-minute strike secured Senegal’s place in the final. Idrissa Gana Gueye praised Mane’s ability to rise to the occasion: “That’s what we expect from him. A big player shows up in big games, and he did it again.”

Even though Mane does not wear the captain’s armband, his words carry weight. Pape Gueye recalled how Mane’s pre-match speech before the Egypt game motivated the team. “He had the right words to make sure we went into the match fully focused,” Gueye said. “He knows how to calm us down, even after we score or concede.”

A Nation’s Hope

Senegal’s current coach, Pape Thiaw, is determined to keep Mane in the national team. “I think he made his decision in the heat of the moment,” Thiaw said. “The country does not agree, and I as coach do not agree at all. We would like to keep him for as long as possible.”

As Senegal prepares to face Morocco, the team is driven by the desire to win the trophy for Mane. “We owe it to him to bring back that second star,” Niakhate said. “It would surely make him one of the greatest players the continent has ever known.”

For Mane, this final could be the perfect ending to an illustrious Afcon career—or the beginning of another chapter. Either way, his legacy is already secure.
