Granit Xhaka has reflected on his relationship with Mikel Arteta—calling the Arsenal manager one of the biggest reasons he returned to the Premier League with Sunderland.
The Swiss midfielder sat down with Kelly Somers for an emotional interview, revealing how Arteta’s guidance shaped his career and personal growth during their time together at the Emirates.
“I will never forget what he did for me,” Xhaka said. “He pushed me, believed in me when others didn’t. That kind of trust—it changes you.”
Xhaka’s move to Sunderland this season raised eyebrows, but the 31-year-old insists the decision was about more than just football. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere I could still compete at the highest level. Arteta’s words stayed with me. He taught me resilience, how to lead, how to fight for every ball like it’s your last.”
His return to England’s top flight has been a mixed bag so far—Sunderland hovering just above the relegation zone—but Xhaka remains focused. “The Premier League is the toughest league in the world. Every point matters. I’m here to help this team grow, just like Arteta helped me grow.”
When asked about their dynamic at Arsenal, Xhaka smiled. “We had our moments—arguments, disagreements. But that’s what made us stronger. He never let me settle. Even when I thought I was playing well, he’d demand more. That’s why I respect him so much.”
