FIFA has confirmed that the Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament will be hosted by Mexico. The matches will be staged across two venues:
Estadio Akron (Guadalajara) and Estadio Monterrey (Monterrey) will each host two matches during the tournament. Due to FIFA regulations around sponsorship, Estadio BBVA will be referred to as Estadio Monterrey throughout the competition.
The choice of Mexico serves a dual purpose. Not only does it provide a neutral yet football-passionate setting, but it also acts as a logistical test event ahead of the World Cup itself, which kicks off in June 2026.
When Are the World Cup Playoffs in 2026?
The inter-confederation playoffs will take place during the March FIFA international window:
Semi-finals: Thursday, 26 March 2026
Finals: Tuesday, 31 March 2026
All matches will be single-leg affairs, ensuring maximum tension and zero margin for error. These games will be played less than three months before the opening match of the World Cup, making them the final hurdle on the global qualification path.
How Do the FIFA Inter-Confederation Playoffs Work?
Six teams from five different confederations will compete for two remaining World Cup places. The format is simple but ruthless.
The teams are split into two separate playoff pathways, each featuring three nations. In each pathway:
Two unseeded teams meet in a semi-final. The winner then faces a seeded team in the final. Win that final, and a World Cup place is secured.
All matches are single-leg knockouts. If the score is level after 90 minutes, extra time is played, followed by a penalty shootout if required.
2026 World Cup Inter-Confederation Playoff Draw Results
The official draw took place on 20 November 2025 at FIFA headquarters in Zurich. Teams were seeded based on the FIFA Men’s World Ranking, with the top two ranked nations advancing directly to the final stage of their respective pathways.
FIFA Playoff Pathway 1 – Guadalajara

The winner of this pathway will book a spot at the World Cup and join Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

What About the UEFA World Cup Playoffs?
While FIFA’s inter-confederation playoffs decide two spots, UEFA’s playoff system will determine the final four European qualifiers.
Sixteen European teams are divided into four separate playoff paths. Each path features two semi-finals on 26 March and a final on 31 March, all played as single-leg matches. Only the winner of each path qualifies.
