Washington Governor Pushes for NBA Expansion in Seattle
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson engaged in an introductory meeting with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Thursday to advocate for the return of the Seattle SuperSonics. The discussion, conducted via ZOOM, marks a formal step in the state’s effort to secure an expansion franchise for the Pacific Northwest.
Brionna Aho, a spokesperson for the Governor, confirmed the interaction followed a request from Ferguson. NBA spokesman Mike Bass corroborated the details, noting the Governor initiated the call to introduce himself and express his support for the city’s basketball ambitions. Ferguson has personal ties to the former franchise, having attended Lenny Wilkens basketball camps and numerous games during his youth.
“The governor recently reached out to Commissioner Adam Silver, requesting an introductory meeting. They had a good conversation, and the governor offered to be helpful.”
Overcoming the 2008 Departure
Seattle has lacked an NBA presence since 2008 when the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City. That move followed a settlement regarding the lease at KeyArena. Today, the local infrastructure is significantly upgraded. Climate Pledge Arena, a multi-billion dollar venue, opened in 2021 on the site of the former arena, providing a modern home for a potential team. Local merchants such as Simply Seattle continue to report high demand for SuperSonics apparel despite the sixteen-year absence.
Community and Business Support
While rumors of a return have circulated for years, fans see this high-level political involvement as a concrete signal. Business owners like Mike Semandiris of Mike’s Chili Parlor argue that the region’s deep basketball culture, which produces consistent high school and collegiate talent, makes the city a premier candidate for expansion. Semandiris contends the atmosphere generated by the Sonics in the 1990s surpassed the excitement of recent Mariners or Seahawks postseason runs.
The NBA has not officially announced expansion plans, but the presence of a modern arena and executive support remains a focal point for the city’s bid. Follow TipsGG for ongoing updates on Seattle’s path back to the NBA circuit.
