Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly reaffirmed his club’s desire to sign Julian Alvarez, addressing the state of negotiations with Atletico Madrid in measured, respectful terms.
“We are very interested in the player, and we would like our offer to be accepted. We are doing this with the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid, and we want them to know that if they are willing to sell during this summer transfer window, we would be ready to buy the player in accordance with the offer we have already made,” Laporta stated in Catalan.
Speaking through official Barcelona club media, Laporta kept his tone conciliatory, making clear that the Catalan side has no interest in forcing a confrontation with the club that holds the Argentine striker’s registration rights.
The offer Barcelona placed on the table sat at approximately €100 million, a figure Atletico Madrid rejected outright. That number stands well short of the €150 million that Real Madrid formally and publicly proposed shortly after Florentino Perez was re-elected as club president.
Alvarez himself made his position known during the World Cup, stating a desire to leave Atletico “to fulfil a dream.” He repeated that stance upon returning for preseason training. Atletico’s hierarchy, including Diego Simeone, Gil Marin, and Enrique Cerezo, has remained firm. Their position is that retaining Alvarez is essential to maintaining competitive standing among Europe’s top clubs.
With Barcelona’s bid rejected and Real Madrid’s substantially higher offer still on record, the pressure on Atletico is real. Barcelona’s public stance keeps the door open while signaling they will not dramatically increase their valuation.
