João Cancelo is back at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Portuguese defender has completed a loan move to Barcelona from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, returning to the LaLiga champions for the remainder of the season.
The 31-year-old previously spent the 2023–24 campaign on loan at Barça from Manchester City, where he quickly established himself as a key figure under Xavi. Cancelo featured in 32 LaLiga matches during that spell, offering his trademark attacking thrust, technical quality, and tactical flexibility from full-back.
After leaving City permanently in August 2024 to join Al Hilal, Cancelo’s time in Saudi Arabia was disrupted by injury. Two hamstring problems sidelined him for over two months, but he returned at a crucial moment and made an immediate impact at the Club World Cup.
Cancelo provided an assist in Al Hilal’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester City in the round of 16, a performance that underlined his enduring quality at the highest level and his ability to influence big matches.
“FC Barcelona and Al Hilal Saudi FC have reached an agreement for the loan of the Portuguese full-back until the end of the season. He will wear the number two shirt,” the club confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday.
On the international stage, Cancelo remains an important figure for Portugal. A member of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in 2018–19, he recently contributed two goals and two assists during Portugal’s successful qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Barcelona, currently leading LaLiga, will be hoping Cancelo’s return adds depth, experience, and attacking balance as they juggle domestic and cup commitments. Xavi’s side are next in action away to Racing in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, with Cancelo potentially in contention to feature.
For Barça fans, this is a familiar and welcome reunion — one that could prove decisive as the season enters its most demanding phase.
