IEM Cologne 2026 Swiss Stage Format Explained
The opening stage features 16 teams competing in a Swiss System format from June 2 to June 5.
The objective is simple: win three matches before losing three.
The top eight teams will advance to Stage 2, while the remaining eight teams will be eliminated from the Major.
All Round 1 matchups are seeded according to the Valve Global Standings, ensuring the strongest teams receive favorable initial pairings based on their rankings.
Round 1
The tournament begins with the initial seeded matchups. All opening matches are played as best-of-one contests, placing immediate pressure on every team to start strong.
Round 2
Teams are divided into two groups:
• High Group (1-0 record)
• Low Group (0-1 record)
Each team is drawn against an opponent they have not previously faced.
Round 3
Teams are split into three record groups:
• High Group (2-0)
• Mid Group (1-1)
• Low Group (0-2)
Teams with a 2-0 record have the opportunity to qualify for Stage 2, while teams at 0-2 face elimination matches.
Round 4
The field is divided between:
• High Group (2-1)
• Low Group (1-2)
Victories in the High Group secure advancement, while defeats in the Low Group end a team’s tournament run.
Round 5
The final qualification and elimination round determines the remaining teams advancing to Stage 2. Winners move forward, while losers are eliminated from the Major.
Rounds 2 through 5 are seeded using the Buchholz system combined with teams’ initial tournament seeding.
All qualification and elimination matches are played as best-of-three series, while non-decision matches remain best-of-one.
