Gyokeres: Swedish Camp Energized Under Potter Ahead of Ukraine World Cup Semi-Final

Viktor Gyokeres has underscored a shift in atmosphere within the Swedish camp since Graham Potter took charge, with the Arsenal striker preparing to lead the line against Ukraine in Thursday’s World Cup qualification play-off semi-final in Valencia.

Sweden’s qualifying campaign deteriorated under previous management, registering just one win across six Group B matches before Jon Dahl Tomasson was replaced. The turnaround came through the UEFA Nations League, where Gyokeres scored nine times in six matches to secure this knockout opportunity.

With Alexander Isak sidelined by injury, the 27-year-old becomes Sweden’s primary attacking threat against a Ukraine side ranked substantially higher in the FIFA standings. Missing the World Cup in Qatar four years ago adds weight to the contest, yet Gyokeres dismisses pressure as a distraction.

“I don’t think about it too much. When you play so many important games, you focus on just trying to do your best. As a striker, you always want to go out and score goals,” Gyokeres stated.

The semi-final carries the hallmarks of a tightly contested affair, with chances potentially scarce against Ukraine’s defense. Gyokeres expects a disciplined Swedish approach to create decisive opportunities.

“The match is extremely important. It’s a tough match. It could be a match where not many chances are created. That’s what counts. We’ll try to go in and get the momentum we want and create good chances,” he said.

Potter’s Impact Evident

Gyokeres will experience Potter’s tenure for the first time after missing November’s fixtures through injury. The contrast with performances from October remains striking.

“It’s more positive, but of course it’s been a few months since then. We’ve tried to put it behind us and focus on this match we have here and hopefully another one in Stockholm in a few days. It’s different with Graham and all the other new members of the coaching staff. It’s easier to put the games from last autumn behind us. Plus, we have a good chance of reaching the World Cup,” Gyokeres explained.

A potential play-off final awaits the winner against either Poland or Albania on March 31st, with Stockholm hosting the decider.

Team Cohesion Strengthened

Beyond tactical adjustments, camaraderie has deepened within the Swedish squad. Gustaf Lagerbielke of Braga revealed regular beach outings alongside teammates Noel Tornqvist and Benjamin Nygren, where conversations range from conspiracy theories to squad selection.

“It gets really deep. Everything from conspiracy theories to the starting XI. We cover whether the moon landing was faked or not. The others had interesting thoughts—it was fun to hear! We’re not very good at zodiac signs, but we discuss how far away they are and whether there are aliens,” Lagerbielke said.

When asked about celestial conditions, the defender offered tongue-in-cheek reassurance: “We think they are in good shape.”
