Van Dijk Refuses to Discuss Netherlands Future Ahead of Squad Announcement

Virgil van Dijk continues to dodge any direct discussion of his future with the Netherlands national team. The captain made that clear once more during Virgil’s Legacy Trophy, the youth tournament he organizes annually in Tilburg.

Van Dijk Stays Guarded on International Future

“I thought we weren’t going to ask questions about the Netherlands. But I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough,” Van Dijk told ESPN on Sunday, brushing aside the topic with a short smile.

Last week, the defender spoke with head coach Xavi, who attended Liverpool‘s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid at the start of the new season. The squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Germany and Greece will be confirmed next Friday, leaving Van Dijk’s involvement still unresolved.

Doubts crept in after EURO 2024, when Van Dijk weighed stepping away from international duty altogether. Ronald Koeman talked him into staying, a decision that kept the center-back in the fold through the World Cup, a campaign that ended for the Dutch in the round of 16.

A Tournament That Means More Than Rest

Van Dijk also spoke briefly with Brabants Dagblad about the tournament carrying his name. “We played with Liverpool yesterday afternoon, I have to train again at the end of the afternoon and now I’m here. That says enough about how important this is to me, doesn’t it?”

“The life of a 12 or 13-year-old is very turbulent, but at the same time you also see players of 16 already making their professional debut. So who knows, maybe this weekend we’ll also see boys here who in three years’ time will win the Champions League, maybe even score the winner in the final. That would be nice.”

Van Dijk said the comment while reflecting on the unpredictable path young players face between academy football and the senior game.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard attended the event in person. Frenkie de Jong, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry each sent video messages for the young participants, adding weight to a tournament Van Dijk treats as more than a formality.
