FPF Preparing FIFA Appeal to Reduce Cristiano Ronaldo’s Suspension

15.11.2025, 10:59

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is finalising an official submission to FIFA in an effort to ensure  Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent red card does not result in a suspension extending beyond a single match. Federation sources confirmed to Lusa on Saturday that the appeal is being coordinated directly by FPF president Pedro Proença, underlining the significance of the case given its potential implications for the 2026 World Cup.

According to the FPF, the appeal is built on three core arguments: the tense pre-match environment created by Republic of Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrímsson, the nature of the incident that led to the dismissal, and Ronaldo’s exceptional disciplinary record—having never previously been sent off in more than 200 appearances for Portugal.

Hostile Atmosphere Cited as a Key Factor

The federation stresses that Hallgrímsson’s remarks ahead of the match—particularly his accusation that Ronaldo heavily influenced refereeing decisions in the earlier meeting between the two sides—“created a clearly and demonstrably hostile environment around the national team captain.” Portugal defeated Ireland 1–0 in that previous fixture at Alvalade, but the narrative surrounding the rematch added a layer of friction that the FPF believes contributed to the incident.

FPF: Reaction Was Triggered by Persistent Holding

In its submission, the FPF argues that the sequence leading to Ronaldo’s sending off was the product of repeated and “blatant” holding inside the penalty area. The forward reacted out of frustration, making contact with defender Dara O’Shea and prompting Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg to issue a straight red card in the 61st minute.

The federation highlights that this was the first dismissal of Ronaldo’s international career—a remarkable feat given his 226 caps—and a strong indicator of his “consistently exemplary conduct” across two decades with the national team.

Concern Over Potential World Cup Impact

The FPF remains “confident” that the mitigating factors presented will persuade FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee to limit the ban to a single game. Anything longer could have significant consequences: should Portugal secure direct qualification, Ronaldo may be forced to miss matches at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The veteran forward has already been released from squad duties ahead of Portugal’s final Group F qualifier against Armenia on Sunday in Porto. His absence adds another layer of pressure as the Seleção aim to confirm their spot in the tournament.

Ronaldo’s Historic Red Card and Portugal’s Missed Opportunity

Thursday’s match in Dublin marked a rare low point for Ronaldo and the national side. Not only did the captain receive his first-ever red card for Portugal, but the team also missed the chance to clinch a ninth—and seventh consecutive—World Cup qualification after falling 2–0 to Ireland, courtesy of a Troy Parrott brace.

The focus now shifts to FIFA’s disciplinary ruling, with the FPF pushing to ensure one of football’s biggest icons remains available when the world’s most prestigious tournament begins in June 2026.
