Format Expansion Shift to Best-of-Three Only
ESL confirmed a major shift for the upcoming IEM Cologne Major by removing best-of-one (BO1) matches from Stage 3. This decision ensures every series in the final qualifying phase will be a best-of-three (BO3). Evidence suggests BO1 formats will persist during Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the competition.
Today, we’re announcing a significant expansion to the #IEM Cologne Major 2026 format. For the first time ever all matches in Stage 3 of a Major will now be played as a best-of-three series.
Revised Schedule and Ticket Availability
Accommodating the denser BO3 schedule requires additional airtime. ESL extended Stage 3 by a full day to run from June 11-15. The organizer also released extra tickets for fans wishing to attend this portion of the event in person.

FURIAProfessional players and fans have criticized Major formats for years due to the continued reliance on BO1 openers and elimination games. Most top-tier tournaments globally have already transitioned to BO3 exclusive formats to reduce volatility and reward tactical depth. This update follows a previous structural adjustment at the StarLadder Budapest Major, which introduced a best-of-five (BO5) final to align the Valve sponsored event with the wider competitive circuit.
