Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has issued a clear challenge to record signing Nick Woltemade, insisting the Magpies need an even greater impact from the German forward as they look to revitalise their Premier League campaign.
Newcastle return to domestic action against Manchester City on Saturday, currently sitting 14th in the table — a position that sharply contrasts with their bold and confident display in the Champions League. And with injuries piling up in attack, the pressure on Woltemade to deliver has only intensified.
A Strong Start, but More Required
Signed from Stuttgart in the summer for £69 million, the 23-year-old striker made an immediate impression, scoring five goals in his first eight appearances across all competitions. But the momentum has faded slightly, with just one goal in his last six matches for Newcastle.
Still, Woltemade reminded everyone of his finishing ability during the international break, netting three goals across Germany’s World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Slovakia. According to Howe, those goals could be the spark his striker needs.
“Considering the lack of training time we’ve had with him, I think he’s done really, really well,” Howe said on Friday. “He started really well in terms of goals, and I think those international goals will do him the world of good.
Confidence is everything to a centre-forward… but we have to demand more, and we need more from him. He’s the focal point of the team.”
Injuries Add Pressure Up Front
The need for Woltemade to step up is heightened by the continued absence of fellow summer arrival Yoane Wissa. The £55 million forward has yet to feature for Newcastle after suffering a knee injury shortly after signing, leaving Howe with limited options in the final third.
With Champions League performances showcasing Newcastle’s potential but Premier League form lagging behind, Howe’s message is clear: Woltemade’s development and output will be central to any hopes of climbing the table.
