Chelsea Part Ways with Enzo Maresca with Immediate Effect

01.01.2026, 07:44

Chelsea have parted company with head coach Enzo Maresca with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to the Italian’s tenure less than two years into a five-year contract that was due to run until 2029.

The decision follows a turbulent run of form, with the Blues failing to win any of their last three Premier League matches. The Athletic reported earlier on Thursday that Chelsea’s board were scheduled to meet to discuss Maresca’s future, with the outcome now confirmed by the club.

In an official statement, Chelsea said:

“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.

“During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.

“We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Success on Paper, Uncertainty Behind the Scenes

On the surface, Maresca’s dismissal appears harsh. The former Leicester City boss delivered silverware in his first season at Stamford Bridge, lifting both the UEFA Conference League and the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

He was also named Premier League Manager of the Month in November, underlining a period where Chelsea looked to be stabilising under his possession-heavy, positional approach.

However, cracks began to show in December. Following a win over Everton on December 13, Maresca admitted the previous 48 hours had been his “worst since I joined the club,” citing a lack of support from certain quarters. Those comments sparked internal uncertainty and external scrutiny.

Manchester City Links Add to the Pressure

Further complications emerged when The Athletic revealed that Maresca was high on Manchester City’s list of potential successors should Pep Guardiola leave the Etihad Stadium next summer. Guardiola remains under contract until 2027, and City insist there is no current vacancy.

Nevertheless, sources briefed on the situation indicate Maresca informed Chelsea on two separate occasions — in late October and again in mid-December — that he had been speaking to figures connected to City regarding a possible future role. He was contractually obliged to disclose such discussions, but the timing only added fuel to an already tense situation.

Ironically, Chelsea are due to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, although it remains unclear who will be in the dugout following Maresca’s departure.

Who Next for Chelsea?

The situation reached a boiling point after Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, Chelsea’s third consecutive game without a win. The final whistle at Stamford Bridge was met with boos, aimed at both the manager and the performance.

Liam Rosenior, currently impressing at fellow BlueCo-owned club Strasbourg, is expected to be among the candidates considered as a successor. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, however, is understood not to be in contention.

Chelsea’s hierarchy remain fully committed to the long-term sporting model introduced following the Clearlake Capital–Todd Boehly takeover in 2022. The next head coach is expected to fit seamlessly into that structure while delivering immediate improvement on the pitch.

Another Chapter Ends at Stamford Bridge

Maresca was appointed in June 2024 after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title and automatic promotion at the first attempt. His exit makes him the sixth Chelsea manager since Roman Abramovich’s departure.

The Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal and just five points clear of 14th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion — a league position that reflects both promise and persistent inconsistency.

Despite the trophies, Chelsea’s relentless pursuit of progress has once again resulted in change. Whether this latest reset brings long-term stability remains the defining question.
