Barcelona Loses Grimaldo to Besiktas After Failed Left-Back Pursuit
Alejandro Grimaldo will not be joining Barcelona this summer. The Bayer Leverkusen left-back has reached a full agreement with Besiktas after the Turkish club presented a lucrative offer, with negotiations between the two clubs already underway.
Barcelona had identified Grimaldo as a potential option to reinforce the left-back position, particularly if Alejandro Balde departed the club. The 22-year-old has attracted strong interest from Aston Villa, prompting the Spanish side to explore alternatives. Andrea Cambiaso of Juventus emerged as another candidate, though Barcelona has not taken concrete steps toward either target.
Grimaldo’s Path Away from Barcelona
This represents the second opportunity Barcelona lost with the 24-year-old. Last summer, when Gerard Martin was linked with a move to the Premier League, Grimaldo was considered as well. That deal collapsed after Martin rejected Wolves‘ proposal and chose to remain at Barcelona.
This year, Grimaldo made himself available for transfer. His camp signaled openness to offers, and Barcelona recognized the profile could fit their system, though he was not a priority target. According to Sky Germany, Besiktas sporting director Eduard Graf personally met with Grimaldo and his representatives in Germany to present the club’s sporting and financial proposal. The left-back approved the move.

Financial Details and Market Context
Grimaldo enters the final year of his Bayer Leverkusen contract this summer. His transfer fee sits around €15 million, a valuation that made him attractive across Europe. The modest asking price, combined with his experience and positioning quality, positioned him as a viable option for Barcelona’s defensive reshaping.
Barcelona continues assessing alternatives. Cambiaso remains a possibility should the club decide to pursue a higher-profile option at left-back, though immediate action appears unlikely. The move to Besiktas closes one avenue for Barcelona’s summer recruitment strategy.
