Xabi Alonso did not hide his frustration after Chelsea‘s 3-0 defeat at Brentford, admitting his side’s second-half display “is not enough to compete in the Premier League.”
The result stretches Chelsea’s winless run to three matches, following a loss to Arsenal and a draw against Hull. Friday’s clash at Brentford’s home ground stayed level until just after the hour mark, when Jaidon Anthony headed in from a set piece to break the deadlock.
Late Collapse Punishes Chelsea
Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho added goals in the final ten minutes, turning a tight contest into a comfortable win for the hosts. The manner of that closing spell was what irritated Alonso most.
Alonso, missing Joao Pedro and Reece James for the trip, pointed to a lack of consistency across matches this season as the root cause of the collapse.
“I’m disappointed at the end with the second half and the result. This is not enough to compete in the Premier League, not to be able to go for the 90 minutes. This is why today we were punished.”
“At the moment, we are not being consistent enough to compete during the whole game; 45 minutes is not enough, you need to play the whole game knowing each detail is important and each action can be decisive.”
“We dropped our consistency, and our competitive mentality needed in the second half. It’s about 95 minutes, and we have not been able to keep that level throughout these few games in the start of the season. It’s something that we’ll have to do better.”
Defensive Cracks Keep Widening
Chelsea’s rapid start to the campaign had masked a defensive problem lurking beneath the surface. Before facing Brentford, their goals-conceded tally and shortage of clean sheets already placed them among the division’s leakiest sides. Three more goals at the Gtech Community Stadium only deepened that pattern.
The loss drops Chelsea to seventh, though with 18 fixtures still to be played across the weekend, a slide into the bottom half remains possible.
Colwill Admits Chelsea Were Bullied
Levi Colwill, wearing the captain’s armband on the night, did not shy away from the harsh truth in his post-match assessment. The opening goal arrived from a corner, exposing set-piece frailties that have dogged the squad.
“Not good enough. At times we have been bullied in the box and we definitely need to improve. We have full trust in our set-piece coach and are still adjusting to new ideas, but we need to improve as a team.”
