Tyrell Malacia Joins FC Cincinnati on One-Year Deal

Tyrell Malacia has completed a move to MLS outfit FC Cincinnati, the club confirmed. The 27-year-old left-back has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Ohio side, closing out a difficult chapter of his career in England and opening a new one in the United States.

FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright welcomed the signing with clear enthusiasm. “We are excited to add a player of Tyrell’s experience,” he said on the club website. “He’s played at the highest levels of the game and understands the demands of competing in those environments. His quality on the ball, defensive instincts, and team-first mentality are a welcome addition to the group, and we’re happy to have him in Cincinnati.”

From Feyenoord to Old Trafford

Malacia’s career took a significant turn in 2022 when Manchester United paid Feyenoord €15 million for his services. The Dutch full-back made an immediate impact in Manchester, featuring in 39 matches during his debut season and establishing himself as a regular option at left-back.

That progress stalled in the summer of 2023 when Malacia suffered a severe knee injury. The setback proved far more serious than initially expected, sidelining him for an extended period and disrupting what had looked like a promising trajectory in the Premier League.

A Long Road Back

Malacia’s recovery was littered with complications. After a string of setbacks, he finally returned to competitive action following a 500-day absence, a staggering gap for any professional footballer. The comeback, though, never translated into a consistent role.

He managed just 12 appearances for Manchester United once he returned to fitness, unable to reclaim the first-team spot he once held. His contract expired last summer, and he departed Old Trafford as a free agent, leaving the club without a fee attached.

The former Netherlands international now gets a fresh platform in MLS, joining a Cincinnati side that currently sits ninth in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 24 games. For a player who spent the better part of two years fighting his way back onto a pitch, this move represents a genuine opportunity to rebuild rhythm and form at a competitive level.
