Who Could Replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City?

23.12.2025, 05:50

Guardiola’s Legacy and the Search for a Successor

Pep Guardiola’s recent admission that Manchester City “must be prepared” for his eventual departure has set the wheels in motion for one of the most significant managerial searches in football history. The 54-year-old, who has redefined English football with six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph during his nine-year tenure, acknowledges that his time at the Etihad will not last forever.

While no timeline has been confirmed Guardiola still has 18 months left on his contract City’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, is reportedly leading the search for his successor. The task ahead is daunting: replacing a manager widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

Premier League Contenders

If City look within England, several names stand out. Enzo Maresca, currently at Chelsea, has already dismissed reports linking him to the role as “100% speculation.” However, his familiarity with City’s hierarchy having served as Guardiola’s assistant in 2022-23 makes him a plausible candidate. His recent success in winning the Club World Cup adds weight to his credentials, though his public frustrations about lack of support at Stamford Bridge may give pause.

Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa from relegation battlers to European contenders, sitting just three points behind league leaders Arsenal. His tactical acumen and experience in multiple leagues could make him an appealing choice.

Other Premier League managers in the conversation include Andoni Iraola, who guided Bournemouth to a ninth-place finish last season, and Oliver Glasner, whose Crystal Palace side stunned City in last season’s FA Cup final. Eddie Howe, fresh off ending Newcastle’s trophy drought with an EFL Cup win, is another name that could enter the mix.

European Heavyweights

Beyond England, City’s search could extend to some of Europe’s most decorated managers. Luis Enrique, Guardiola’s former Barcelona teammate, delivered Paris Saint-Germain their first Champions League title last season. However, his potential appointment could reignite tensions with Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was sold to City after being deemed surplus to requirements under Enrique.

Xabi Alonso, another ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich midfielder under Guardiola, has seen his stock rise after leading Bayer Leverkusen to a Bundesliga title. Though now at Real Madrid, his future remains uncertain, and Guardiola has publicly praised his former protégé.

Vincent Kompany, a City legend as both captain and four-time Premier League winner, has rebuilt his managerial reputation at Bayern Munich. After a difficult spell at Burnley, he has dominated the Bundesliga, currently holding a nine-point lead. His emotional ties to the club could make him a fan favorite.

Other notable figures include Zinedine Zidane, who remains out of work since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, and Julian Nagelsmann, whose future may hinge on Germany’s performance at the next World Cup. Former City midfielder Dietmar Hamann has suggested Nagelsmann could be an option, citing Guardiola’s high regard for him.

Wildcards and Internal Options

Could City look inward? Pep Lijnders, Guardiola’s current assistant, has had mixed success in previous managerial roles, with a 47% win rate across stints at NEC and Red Bull Salzburg. Meanwhile, Oliver Reiss, the Under-18s lead coach, has impressed with a 21-game winning streak, but the leap to first-team management would be substantial.

Elsewhere, Mikel Arteta another former Guardiola assistant has transformed Arsenal into title contenders, finishing second in each of the past three seasons. Could City lure him back? And what of Jurgen Klopp, now head of the Red Bull group? The former Liverpool boss’s battles with Guardiola were legendary, but would he consider a return to the Premier League?

The Road Ahead

Whoever succeeds Guardiola will inherit a squad built for dominance, but the pressure to maintain City’s standards will be immense. The search is on and the football world will be watching closely.
