Wembanyama Downplays Injury After Awkward Landing
The San Antonio Spurs breathed a sigh of relief as Victor Wembanyama dismissed concerns over his left knee injury, calling it a “simple hyperextension” following the team’s 134-132 victory against the New York Knicks. The French rookie exited the game in the fourth quarter after an awkward landing during a rebound battle with Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson, clutching his knee before being assisted off the court.
I was confident, I was really close to getting back on the floor. They had to hold me back. It’s just a hyperextension, it should be something minor.

Wembanyama walked to the locker room under his own power, reassuring teammates and fans by repeating, “I’m fine.” He later returned to the bench in a tracksuit, a gesture that eased tensions. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged the positive sign:
I haven’t spoken to the medical staff yet, but the fact that he was on the bench with his teammates made me feel good. I think that’s what everyone saw.

This incident follows a left calf injury that sidelined Wembanyama for 12 games earlier in the season. However, the rookie remains optimistic, stating he expects to return for the next game. The Spurs are cautiously hopeful, with no immediate signs suggesting a lengthy absence.
