Wembanyama’s Heavy Heart
Victor Wembanyama took the court for the NBA Cup Final carrying more than just his team’s hopes. Hours before the game, he learned of his grandmother’s passing in France. Most would step away from the game under such circumstances, but Wembanyama chose to play.
A Subdued Performance
The Spurs‘ rookie didn’t start the game against the Knicks, but his presence was felt once he entered. His usual energy was replaced by a quiet intensity, punctuated by moments of distraction. In 25 minutes, he recorded 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks solid stats in a game that ended in a loss for San Antonio.
Emotional Press Conference
Postgame, Wembanyama struggled to hold back emotion. Speaking softly, he shared,
I lost someone very close to me today.
After a few questions, tears overcame him, and he left the room. Later, The Athletic reported that his grandmother had passed away.
