Preparation, though, has been fragmented. Players filtered back into preseason at different times depending on how deep they went at the World Cup. Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembélé, who signed off with six goals and two assists for France, reported on Monday alongside international team-mates Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. Fabián Ruiz came back at the same time as a world champion with Spain, his sharp semi-final showing against France one of the tournament’s decisive individual displays.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the outlier. Georgia did not qualify, so the winger has been training for considerably longer and looks a certainty on his favoured left flank, with new signing Maghnes Akliouche a candidate on the right. Akliouche’s move from Monaco may eventually be offset by a departure, with Barcola — a three-goal scorer at the World Cup — heavily linked to Liverpool. Lucas Digne could also line up against his former employers: the 33-year-old left back joined from Villa on Sunday for a reported €10 million ($11.6m), returning to a club he first signed for from Lille in 2013 before spells at Roma and Barcelona and eight Premier League years with Everton and Aston Villa that brought 182 appearances.
The warm-up results offered little comfort. PSG lost 3-0 to Spanish side Mallorca, then were pegged back to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United on Saturday despite scoring early. Match rhythm, rather than talent, is the question, and several regulars are unavailable.
Aston Villa ahead of the match
Unai Emery opens his fourth full season at Villa Park against a club he used to manage. Villa are here because they beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final, the high point of a campaign that also delivered a fourth-place Premier League finish and a second Champions League qualification under Emery. This is not entirely new ground for the club, either: Villa won their only previous Super Cup back in 1982, over two legs against Barcelona.
The summer has thinned the middle of the pitch. Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea, Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United, and Digne’s sale to PSG removed one of Emery’s steadiest performers. The rebuild has brought in Swiss World Cup breakout Johan Manzambi and Brazilian midfielder João Gomes from relegated Wolverhampton, but Manzambi is out with a knee injury and will not feature in Austria.
Villa’s preseason was busier than PSG’s, though the results were mixed: three defeats in five, the latest to Bayern Munich on Friday, with earlier losses to FC Porto and Real Sociedad. Their two wins came against an Indonesian All-Star selection and Thailand’s Pathum United, so the evidence against elite opposition is thin. What Emery does have is condition — his players carry far more minutes in their legs than a PSG squad still reassembling — and a genuine track record in Europe, built long before Villa and reinforced by last season’s continental run.
Like their opponents, Villa will be without several first-choice names, which makes the shape of both starting elevens one of the more interesting unknowns of the night.

The clubs have met exactly twice, and both games came in the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-finals. PSG won the first leg 3-1 at the Parc des Princes, Villa answered with a 3-2 win at Villa Park, and Paris squeezed through 5-4 on aggregate. One victory each, and four goals conceded across 180 minutes by a side that went on to lift the trophy — the record genuinely cuts both ways.
The likeliest storyline is rust against readiness. PSG have the better squad by a distance and the pedigree to match, but two winless friendlies and a scattered return to training leave room for a slow start. Villa are sharper and know exactly how to make Paris uncomfortable, having already done it once, yet their three preseason defeats all came against established European opposition, and Bayern Munich exposed the same gap they will face here.
