LeBron James Hails Luka Magic After Dončić’s Historic 45-Point Triple-Double

19.12.2025, 09:09

Even LeBron James could only shake his head in admiration after witnessing another masterclass from Luka Dončić. The Lakers superstar summed it up simply: “Luka magic.”

Dončić delivered a staggering all-around performance, pouring in 45 points while adding 14 assists and 11 rebounds to record his fifth triple-double of the season. The result was a statement 143-135 road victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night.

“That’s Luka. Luka magic! It’s no surprise,” James said after the game. “He’s just so damn good, it’s ridiculous.”

James backed up the praise with a strong showing of his own, finishing with 28 points and 10 assists, but the night belonged firmly to Dončić.

A Historic Night in Purple and Gold

The performance marked Dončić’s first 40-point triple-double as a Laker since arriving last season and placed him in rare historical company. He became just the second player since the NBA began tracking steals to record a 45-point triple-double with five steals, joining Cade Cunningham.

Yet for Dončić, the most satisfying number on the stat sheet wasn’t points or assists.

“One turnover is the best thing on this stat sheet,” Dončić said with a smile. “We had seven turnovers as a team, which is impressive for us, and we won the game.”

Clutch Control When It Mattered Most

The Lakers appeared comfortable after building a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Utah made things interesting by cutting the deficit to 134-130. Dončić responded exactly how elite playmakers do, finding Jaxson Hayes for a momentum-swinging alley-oop that effectively sealed the win.

That moment also sparked a lively exchange with a Jazz fan seated courtside, as Dončić yelled, “Sit down,” and followed it with, “How are you doing now?” after Hayes’ emphatic dunk.

Despite constant traps and double teams, Dončić scored 10 points in the fourth quarter alone as Los Angeles closed the game on a 41-29 run.

The Lakers are now a perfect 10-0 in clutch situations this season with Dončić orchestrating the offense.

“It’s pretty awesome to be 10-0 in the clutch, and 12-3 on the road too,” Dončić said. “That’s not easy in this league.”

Leadership Beyond the Numbers

For more than two decades, James has been accustomed to being the primary playmaker. Now, that responsibility increasingly belongs to Dončić, especially in crunch time — and the results speak for themselves.

Marcus Smart benefited from Dončić’s gravity during a decisive fourth-quarter stretch, knocking down two three-pointers as Utah aggressively doubled the ball. Smart also highlighted Dončić’s composure in a tightly officiated game that saw frustrations rise on both sides.

“It was big-time for us,” Smart said. “I know he was very frustrated, but he stayed locked in mentally. He controlled his team and helped us come up with this victory.”

Winning Despite Adversity

The Lakers were without Austin Reaves and Deandre Ayton due to injury, but Dončić made sure absences weren’t an excuse. Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged both the brilliance and the room for improvement.

“There are stretches of excellence and stretches where he’s not as engaged defensively,” Redick said. “But he played well enough to lead us to a win. He and LeBron combined for 28 assists and just three turnovers.”

Even after one of the most complete performances of the season, Dončić remained self-critical.

“Honestly,” he said, “I could do some more.”

For a player already redefining what “Luka magic” looks like in Los Angeles, that mindset might be the most dangerous sign of all.
