Koeman Demands Safety Guarantees for 2026 World Cup
Ronald Koeman, manager of the Netherlands, has publicly raised concerns about safety protocols for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Amnesty International’s formal warning about human rights restrictions across the host nations.
Amnesty International released a report on Monday detailing how “severe restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful protest” threaten FIFA’s promise of a “safe, welcoming and inclusive” tournament. The organisation highlighted potential risks for the millions of football fans expected to attend the competition across Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
Speaking at Monday’s press conference before the Netherlands‘ friendly against Ecuador on Tuesday, Koeman emphasised the non-negotiable nature of spectator and player security. “Sport should be enjoyable, and you should be able to go somewhere safely. As a fan, you should be able to support your country safely. There needs to be clarity on this, and it needs to be properly organised,” he stated.
The Netherlands face Japan, Tunisia, and either Sweden or Poland in Group F. They will play matches across Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City.
Koeman stressed that responsibility extends across the entire football ecosystem. “That is down to all the associations. That is down to the entire organisation, including FIFA. I believe it will be properly organised. We are counting on that. I think it is right that people demand that players and fans must be safe during the World Cup.”
His remarks reflect growing pressure on tournament organisers to implement concrete measures addressing human rights concerns and physical security ahead of the 2026 competition.
