Julian Nagelsmann is facing the sack as Germany national team coach, with tabloid Bild reporting Thursday that the German Football Association (DFB) has already presented him with a severance offer. Jurgen Klopp, who stepped away from club management after leaving Liverpool in 2024, is widely regarded as the frontrunner to take over.
According to Bild, which published images of Nagelsmann at DFB headquarters in Frankfurt, the 38-year-old was offered a severance package of seven million euros ($8 million) during a three-hour meeting. His contract, last renewed in January 2025, runs until 2028, and while his annual salary has never been officially confirmed, German media place it at roughly seven million euros per year.
Germany’s penalty shootout loss to Paraguay at the World Cup represented the country’s third consecutive early exit from the tournament. The four-time champions were eliminated in the group stage in both Russia and Qatar before this latest last-32 defeat. Monday’s match was Germany’s first knockout appearance since their 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced an immediate investigation into the failure on Tuesday. AFP sports subsidiary SID reported Thursday that a decision on Nagelsmann’s future is expected “by the beginning of next week at the latest.”

Several German outlets, including Sky and Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, identify Klopp as the clear preferred successor. Since departing Liverpool, Klopp has served as head of global football for energy drink brand Red Bull, overseeing a multi-club network spanning Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States, and Japan.
Whether Klopp is prepared to leave that role for international management remains the central question. Stay with TipsGG for full coverage as the DFB’s decision takes shape.
