Rennes welcome Marseille to Roazhon Park sitting fifth in the early Ligue 1 table, while Bruno Génésio’s side arrive in tenth having already dropped two of their opening three fixtures. There is an odd wrinkle here too: Marseille have not beaten Rennes away from home in their last three visits to Roazhon Park in all competitions, a run that includes a Coupe de France exit last season. Génésio’s squad has scored plenty this term but the defense has leaked goals at a worrying rate, and that gap between attack and defense could define how this one plays out.
Esteban Lepaul has been the sharpest weapon in Rennes’ attack, netting three goals from just three appearances and firing more shots than anyone else in this preview. On the other side, Amine Gouiri has been Marseille’s spark, scoring four goals in his last four outings and looking like the one player capable of dragging his side back into games on his own. Watch both of them closely, because whoever finds space first could tilt the entire match.
Hot stat: Lepaul has taken 14 shots across his last three matches for Rennes, more than double the output of any other player featured in this preview, and he has converted three of them into goals, a strike rate few forwards in Ligue 1 can currently match.

Rennes vs Marseille prediction
We predict Rennes edge this one at home. Franck Haise’s side have won two of their last three matches, sit above Marseille in the table by seven points to three, and have scored seven goals across their last five outings compared to conceding just five. Marseille, on the other hand, have lost three of their last four games and their defense has been breached repeatedly by sides of similar quality to Rennes.
Rennes have committed 37 fouls and picked up six yellow cards over their last five matches, a slightly more physical approach than Marseille’s 33 fouls and four cautions. Marseille complete their passes at a noticeably higher rate, around 91% compared to Rennes’ 84%, which suggests Génésio’s men will control more of the ball but Rennes could be the sharper side in the transition moments, where Lepaul thrives.
Our value pick leans towards Rennes to win, perhaps combined with both teams finding the net given how open both defenses have looked recently.

Team Analysis
Rennes go into this match on the back of a 2-1 win over Angers, their second win in the last three matches after a difficult mid-run of results. Before that they beat Le Mans 3-2 and drew 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain, results that show a team capable of scoring goals but still prone to defensive lapses, something Marseille could look to exploit through Gouiri and Abdallah. Rennes did lose to Sunderland and Brentford in earlier friendlies, but domestically their form has picked up nicely heading into this fixture.
Marseille arrive off the back of a 2-3 loss to Paris, their third defeat in four matches. Before that they lost 0-2 to Monaco, a result that will worry Génésio given how comfortable Monaco looked. There were bright spots too, a 4-0 win over Strasbourg showed the attacking quality still on the roster, but the overall trend of one win in four says a team still searching for consistency at the back.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Rennes the favourite
- Moneyline Rennes 2.10 | Marseille 3.10
- Draw 3.80
The market leans towards Rennes, and rightly so given the table position and recent form on both sides. Bookmakers have Rennes at around 45% to win compared to Marseille’s 31%, with the draw sitting at 25%. Those numbers line up closely with what the underlying stats suggest, Rennes have been the more reliable side over the last month and that should count for something at home.
Possible Starting Lineups
Rennes possible starting eleven
- GK: Brice Samba
- DF: Charlie Cresswell, Przemysław Frankowski, Quentin Merlin, Mahamadou Nagida
- MF: Valentin Rongier, Mahdi Camara, Sebastian Szymański, Adrien Thomasson, Mousa Al-Tamari
- FW: Esteban Lepaul
Haise should stick with the 4-2-3-1 that has served Rennes well, with Rongier and Camara screening the back four while Szymański and Thomasson supply the creativity behind Lepaul. Keep an eye on Frankowski, who has chipped in with a goal and an assist and offers an extra outlet down the right.
Marseille possible starting eleven

- GK: Jeffrey De Lange
- DF: Emerson Palmieri, CJ Egan-Riley, Nayef Aguerd, Derek Cornelius
- MF: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Angel Gomes, Timothy Weah, Amine Harit
- FW: Amine Gouiri
Génésio also favors a 4-2-3-1, with Højbjerg and Kondogbia protecting a defense that has looked shaky lately. Gouiri leads the line alone and needs the service from Gomes and Harit to keep firing, since he has carried much of Marseille’s attacking output on his own this season.

The Verdict
We predict Rennes to win this one, backed by their stronger recent form, home advantage at Roazhon Park, and a Marseille side still working out defensive issues. To be honest, Marseille’s attacking talent means a clean sheet for Rennes feels unlikely, so our punters team leans towards a narrow Rennes win with goals at both ends, perhaps something close to 2-1 or 2-2 in Rennes’ favor on the scoreline market. The corner count should run high too given both sides’ willingness to attack down the flanks.
