Brighton & Hove Albion’s top scorer Joao Pedro will miss their pivotal Premier League showdown against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday, following a reported altercation in training. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler confirmed the 23-year-old striker’s omission, labeling it a result of a “small issue” behind the scenes.
Internal Disciplinary Action
“With Joao we had a small issue in training, the type which isn’t uncommon from time to time in all football clubs. We dealt with it internally and the matter is closed,” Hurzeler explained during Friday’s press conference.
Pedro, who shares the club’s top-scoring honors with Danny Welbeck at 10 goals, was also absent in Brighton’s thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool on Monday. According to The Athletic, his exclusion stemmed from a clash with a teammate during a training session.
“Joao is a match-winner, and there’s no doubt about his talent. But principles and values are non-negotiable,” Hurzeler added. “He’s still young and will learn from this. We expect him to come back stronger next season.”
Season Setback
Pedro last featured on April 19, when he received a red card for an altercation with Brentford’s Nathan Collins, resulting in a three-match ban for violent conduct. The incident capped a turbulent run-in for the Brazilian forward.
European Ambitions at Stake
Brighton currently sit eighth in the table, three points ahead of Brentford. A draw at Tottenham would secure that position, potentially earning the Seagulls a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League—pending results from other fixtures.
With a lot riding on this fixture, Pedro’s absence is a significant blow to Brighton’s European dreams. Fans will be hoping the team can rally and deliver a result to close out the campaign on a high.
