Francisco Conceicao pushed back on Sunday against scrutiny of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s role in Portugal‘s World Cup campaign, insisting his teammates feel no obligation to force passes to the 41-year-old veteran.

Critics have questioned whether Ronaldo‘s reduced mobility is dragging down Portugal‘s chances following a pedestrian 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The display raised concerns about the squad’s attacking structure and whether accommodating their all-time top scorer is costing them fluidity in the final third.
Conceicao was direct in addressing the narrative.
“We don’t feel the need to pass him the ball. I pass it to whoever I think is in the best position and unmarked.”
The Juventus winger framed Ronaldo as “just another member of the squad”, one that the collective depends on equally alongside every other player. That framing strips the debate of its drama without dismissing Ronaldo‘s value.
“Cristiano is an example because of his career and the hunger he still possesses at 41 years of age… An example of leadership and the goals he scores. There is no one like him when it comes to scoring goals… He is here to help, just like any other player.”
Portugal face Uzbekistan in their second Group K match in Houston on Tuesday, a fixture they must win to put their campaign back on track after the Congo result left them with a single point from the opening round.
Conceicao made clear the squad is carrying that pressure internally.
“No one takes it harder than we do. We felt firsthand that we didn’t do our job in the best possible way. If things don’t go well, there will be more pressure and more criticism. We want to show our quality and win the next match.”
