Mavericks Part Ways with Harrison
The Dallas Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison on Tuesday, nine months after the controversial trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The move followed a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, where fans chanted “fire Nico” a common refrain since the trade.
Patrick Dumont, Mavericks governor, admitted the trade was a mistake during a conversation with a teen fan, Nicholas Dickason, during the game. Dickason shared Dumont’s words: “He said he was trying to do what’s best for the organization, and ‘Sometimes you have good intentions and you make mistakes. We all do it.'”

The Mavericks appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers. Despite hopes for goodwill, the team’s struggles continue. Dallas is 3-8, and Anthony Davis, acquired in the trade, has missed six games due to injury.
A Stunning Downfall
Harrison, in his fourth season, had previously engineered successful trades that led the Mavericks to the Western Conference finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2023. However, the Doncic trade and a slow start to the season without the superstar led to a rapid decline. Doncic, now with the Lakers, is averaging 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game.
The Mavericks’ struggles are evident in the empty seats at the American Airlines Center, a sight not seen consistently since 2018. The team’s 1.8% chance to win the draft lottery resulted in landing Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick, but it hasn’t translated to on-court success.
