Carragher Rules Out Arteta Exit Despite Arsenal’s Title Lead Collapse
Arsenal surrendered a decisive advantage in the title race after falling to Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The defeat cuts the Gunners’ lead to three points, with City holding a game in hand that could see them overtake the north London club into first place.
City‘s pending fixture against Burnley on Wednesday presents an immediate threat. Should Pep Guardiola’s side secure victory, they would leapfrog Arsenal into the top spot. The collapse represents a significant swing: Arsenal have surrendered a nine-point advantage, marking what would be a third consecutive season losing the summit lead.
On Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Jamie Carragher assessed the title race dynamics. “I think City have got the edge,” he stated. “Momentum, experience, how that will affect Arsenal psychologically matters. Not just that game, the run of games they’re on, the performances as well. This was definitely a better performance, there’s no doubt about that.”
The former Liverpool defender pushed back against suggestions that failure to win this season would cost Mikel Arteta his position. “I don’t think it’s a case that if they didn’t win the league then Arteta would be out of a job, nothing like that.”
Carragher highlighted a critical distinction between this campaign and previous title near-misses. “This does feel different than previous seasons because I don’t think I’ve ever felt they were the best team in the league. For the majority of this season most people in this country have felt Arsenal have the best squad and the best team, and now it’s just turning very late in the season unfortunately for them.”
He contrasted City‘s consistent dominance in recent years. “In the past we’ve always felt it was Liverpool last season or it was City a couple of seasons before that—they did have the edge on Arsenal and they should win it. The best team won it. It hasn’t felt like that for a lot of this season, and there have been times where Arsenal have been nine points clear. They had a chance to go 12 points clear.”
Carragher maintained that Arsenal retain their chances. “Arsenal are still in there. Arsenal have got to think like that: win all our games and we’ll be champions.”
Arsenal face Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium this weekend, potentially sitting second by kickoff depending on City‘s midweek result against Burnley.
