Cherries Add Experienced Keeper to Ranks
Bournemouth have bolstered their goalkeeping options with the season-long loan signing of Christos Mandas from Lazio.
The 24-year-old Greek international becomes the club’s first player from Greece, arriving at the Vitality Stadium with a wealth of Serie A experience under his belt.
Mandas joins until the end of the campaign, with Bournemouth holding an option to make the move permanent. The deal includes a £1.3m loan fee—rising to £1.5m if the club choose not to trigger the purchase clause. Should they opt for a permanent switch, the fee will climb to £16m.
Since moving to Lazio from OFI, Mandas has racked up 33 appearances for the Italian side. He’s also earned two caps for Greece, adding international pedigree to his résumé.
“When I knew Bournemouth were interested, I wanted to come here,” Mandas said. “It feels like a magical atmosphere between the players and the fans, and I like the way the team plays, so it is the right move.”
Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s head of football operations, was equally enthusiastic about the signing.
“We’re excited about the impact he can make as he brings a sense of maturity and composure, while also continuing his development as a player.”
Mandas is the second goalkeeper to arrive at the Vitality Stadium this month. Fraser Forster, the 37-year-old former Tottenham and Celtic stopper, joined on a six-month deal earlier in January—adding further depth to the Cherries’ squad as they push for Premier League survival.
A Calculated Gamble?
With Neto currently first-choice between the sticks, Mandas will have to bide his time. But his arrival signals Bournemouth’s intent to strengthen in key areas—even if it means taking a financial gamble on a young keeper with limited top-flight exposure.
The club will hope his composure and experience in Italy’s demanding league can provide a steadying influence, whether he’s called upon immediately or not.
