Real Madrid have officially parted ways with Xabi Alonso after just seven months in charge at the Santiago Bernabéu, bringing an abrupt end to one of the most anticipated managerial tenures in recent club history.
The decision follows a dramatic Supercopa defeat to Barcelona, a result that intensified pressure on the Spanish coach after a season marked by inconsistency and unmet expectations.
Alonso arrived in Madrid amid huge optimism, having earned widespread acclaim at Bayer Leverkusen. His work in Germany was nothing short of historic, guiding the club to a Bundesliga title while ending Bayern Munich’s dominance of 11 consecutive league crowns. In a statement released on Monday, the club confirmed the separation was reached by mutual consent.
“Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first team coach to an end,” the statement read.
“Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.”
The club also expressed gratitude to Alonso and his staff for their commitment during a turbulent campaign, wishing them success in the next chapter of their careers.
Attention now turns to the future, with Real Madrid moving quickly to name a successor. Former Madrid, Liverpool and Spain defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been promoted from Real Madrid B after impressing within the club’s youth structure.
Arbeloa’s appointment signals a desire for continuity and a renewed focus on internal development, but he steps into one of football’s most demanding roles under immediate pressure to deliver silverware.
