Victor Wembanyama ignited for a 25-point first quarter on Tuesday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 136-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The performance served as a personal challenge for the young star to eliminate the roster’s inconsistency against shorthanded opponents.

The Spurs center finished with 40 points and 12 rebounds in just 26 minutes of play. His efficiency was immediate, shooting 8 of 9 from the field with three shots from beyond the arc in the opening eight minutes. By halftime, he had secured 37 points as San Antonio built a 30-point lead over a Lakers squad missing Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves.

“What got me going was honestly proving myself a point, proving my team a point,” Wembanyama said. “I’m not worried about us against good teams. But history has showed that I need to be worried about us against teams like this. We need to actually act.”

Record-Breaking Efficiency in Limited Minutes

The 37-point first half stands as the highest-scoring half by any NBA player this season. It also represents the most productive half by a Spurs player in the 21st century. Wembanyama became the first player since Sleepy Floyd in 1991 to score 40 points in 26 minutes or fewer.

Lakers coach JJ Redick noted the aggressive approach from the opening tip.

“He was as aggressive to start a game as I’ve seen him, both in attacking the basket and in shooting without hesitation,” Redick said. “He just really put his imprint on the game in that first half.”

Overcoming Consistency Issues

Despite holding the league’s third-best record at 37-16, San Antonio has struggled recently against struggling franchises. Since late December, they have dropped games to Charlotte, New Orleans, Memphis, and Portland. Wembanyama emphasized that the team must maintain a “greedy” mentality regardless of the opponent’s standing or health.

Coach Mitch Johnson opted to rest his star for much of the second half, especially with a back-to-back game against Golden State scheduled for Wednesday. Wembanyama checked out with over four minutes remaining in the third quarter after hitting his final three-pointer.

All-Star Snubs and MVP Trajectory

The Spurs remain the only elite team without multiple All-Star selections. While Wembanyama will represent the team in the All-Star Game at the Intuit Dome, Johnson expressed surprise that De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle were overlooked. He suggested that the lack of additional All-Stars might indicate that voters view Wembanyama as a primary MVP front-runner.
