Frank Defends Van de Ven Over Isak Clash
Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has publicly defended Micky van de Ven following criticism from Liverpool boss Arne Slot over a challenge that left Alexander Isak with a broken leg in Saturday’s Premier League fixture.
The incident occurred as Isak scored the opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 14. Slot described the tackle as reckless, claiming it would result in serious injury “10 out of 10 times.”
“I disagree. We’re talking about a defender who will do everything to prevent a goal. It’s a transition—he’s sprinting back. A ball is slid down the side, and he does everything to block it. Unfortunately, Isak planted his foot in the wrong place, making it look worse than it was. If my defender doesn’t make that challenge, I don’t think he’s a true defender. I don’t see it as reckless at all. Micky doesn’t make those kinds of challenges.”
Frank confirmed the pair had resolved the matter privately, calling it a positive sign. Tottenham, now 14th in the table with one win in their last eight league matches, face Crystal Palace on December 22—a side four points ahead and riding high under Oliver Glasner.
Glasner’s Tactical Impact at Palace
Frank praised Glasner for transforming Palace into a disciplined unit following their FA Cup triumph last season. The Austrian manager has guided the Eagles to an eighth-place start after finishing 12th in 2023-24.
“Oliver has done a top job at Palace. Very impressive. Clear identity—defend low, stay compact, and hit on the counter. They’re one of the best on set-pieces and have added long throws.”
Tottenham’s visit to Selhurst Park presents a stern test. Glasner’s side have conceded just 15 goals this season, the fourth-best record in the league, while averaging 1.5 goals per game on the break.
