Scholes Identifies Rice as Manchester United’s Missing Piece
Paul Scholes has changed his assessment of Declan Rice, now urging Manchester United to pursue the Arsenal midfielder this summer. The former United captain previously criticized the England international but now views him as the ideal replacement for departing Casemiro.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes acknowledged his shift in perspective:
“I think I would go Declan Rice. I know I’ve slagged him off a little bit but I think Manchester United need someone like Rice. I think they need a proper central midfielder.”
The 11-time Premier League winner identified the 27-year-old as his dream signing to strengthen United’s midfield for both domestic and European competition.

Casemiro’s confirmed departure at season’s end creates a significant void in United’s engine room. The Brazilian’s exit forces the club to act decisively in the transfer market, with limited time to rebuild the midfield spine.

“I heard Rio Ferdinand say something the other day about who is a realistic managerial target for United. But every manager and player should be realistic for Man United. Who isn’t a realistic target for United? I don’t believe that, I think anyone is possible for United.”
This statement underscores Scholes’s confidence in the club’s financial and institutional standing, even amid recent underperformance.
