Solskjaer approached, Rohl in the frame as Rangers weigh options
Paul Scholes has suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — the former Manchester United and Cardiff City manager — has been approached by Rangers, according to comments on the The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
Boardroom opinion at Ibrox is divided. Senior figures remain split over whether to push ahead with Danny Rohl, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss, as reported by the Daily Record. Other outlets say Rohl is a strong candidate while approaches to Graham Potter and Gary O’Neil were turned down — neither was interested in moving to Ibrox, per TeamTalk.
Chinese Super League coach Kevin Muscat, currently in charge at Shanghai Port, is said to be a serious option for the job, the Scottish Sun reports.
Meanwhile the club have reportedly been in contact with several names and are weighing up who can move quickly into the dugout. The Scotsman suggests the window to appoint a new manager before Rangers’ next league fixture against Dundee United at Ibrox is becoming tight.
Staff moves linked to those circles are already happening. Chris Powell — who worked as Rohl’s assistant at Sheffield Wednesday — has taken a role on Jack Wilshere‘s backroom staff at Luton Town, according to The Herald.
Former Croatia boss Slaven Bilić says he is “ready for work” and “waiting for the right offer”, after being mentioned as a potential candidate by the Glasgow Times.
Steven Gerrard — who pulled out of the process — was reportedly impressed by the Rangers representatives he met and would be open to discussions with the club in future, Sky Sports adds.
There is some movement further afield: Bologna winger Jesper Karlsson revealed he spoke to teammates Lewis Ferguson and Ylber Ramadani before agreeing a loan move to Aberdeen, reuniting with manager Jimmy Thelin, the Daily Record reports.
The picture remains unsettled. Names are being floated, targets are being considered, and the board at Ibrox will need to decide quickly whether to back a known quantity or back a fresh option.
