Wayne Rooney has backed Arsenal’s teenage sensation Max Dowman to go on and enjoy a “massive future” in football after his eye-catching Premier League debut.
Dowman made history at the Emirates on Saturday when he came off the bench aged just 15 years and 234 days during Arsenal’s emphatic 5-0 win over Leeds United. The attacking midfielder wasted no time making an impact, winning a late penalty that Viktor Gyökeres calmly converted.
Rooney Sees Himself in Dowman
Rooney, who burst onto the scene with Everton as a 16-year-old before becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer with a thunderbolt against Arsenal in 2002, admitted Dowman’s debut struck a personal chord.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast, the Manchester United legend said:
“To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy. I know I played when I was young, but he’s about 150 days younger than I was. For Max and his family, it must feel like a dream right now. But his future is so bright — he’s going to have a massive career.”

Rooney added that Dowman is already becoming a name on everyone’s lips inside the footballing world: “Everyone you speak to, the same name keeps coming back: Max Dowman.”
Arsenal’s History of Teenage Talent
Dowman follows in the footsteps of teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who still holds the record as the Premier League’s youngest ever player after making his Arsenal debut at just 15 years and 181 days in 2022 against Brentford.
With manager Mikel Arteta continuing to trust young prospects in big moments, Arsenal’s reputation as a hub for youth development is only growing stronger.
Managing the Pressure
Rooney also issued a word of caution about the pressures of breaking into the top flight so young:
“It’s surreal — one minute you’re with the youth team, the next you’re in the first-team dressing room with your heroes. It can be overwhelming. But Max looks very level-headed from everything I’ve seen, and hopefully he manages it well because big things are coming his way.”
For now, Arsenal fans will be buzzing at the thought of Dowman becoming the next homegrown star to light up the Emirates. If Rooney’s words are anything to go by, the Premier League might just have witnessed the birth of its next superstar.
