Rashford Tears Up Barcelona Contract Offer to Force Permanent Transfer

18.05.2026, 05:09

Marcus Rashford is willing to make significant financial concessions to secure a permanent move to Barcelona, with the Manchester United forward reportedly prepared to scrap a previously agreed deal and accept a longer contract to help the Catalan club manage the transfer cost.

Rashford has spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the Camp Nou and is determined to remain in Catalonia beyond the summer. The two clubs have been in discussions for several months but have failed to reach an agreement. United are holding firm on a £26.2 million valuation, a figure Barcelona are currently unwilling to meet.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Rashford had already agreed in principle to a three-year contract at Barcelona that included a 40 per cent cut on his Old Trafford salary. With talks stalling, he is now prepared to abandon that arrangement entirely and commit to a five-year deal instead, believing it may be the only structure that makes the transfer financially viable for the club.

Barcelona‘s well-documented financial constraints have complicated negotiations, with the club preferring another loan arrangement over a permanent purchase. The core issue is how the £26.2 million fee would be amortised across Rashford‘s contract duration and the knock-on effect on the club’s financial accounts. A five-year deal would allow Barcelona to spread that cost over a longer period, substantially reducing the annual financial obligation.

United are refusing to sanction another temporary arrangement. Their position is clear: Rashford leaves permanently this summer or he returns to the club.

Rashford recorded 14 goals and 14 assists in 48 appearances for Barcelona this season, performances that have satisfied the club and reinforced his desire to stay. Barcelona hold an option to buy the forward.

A return to Manchester United is not entirely off the table. With Ruben Amorim, under whose management Rashford‘s relationship with the club deteriorated, no longer in charge, the dynamic at Old Trafford has shifted. Rashford‘s former team-mate Michael Carrick is expected to be appointed permanent manager in the coming days, which could represent a clean slate.

Despite those developments, Rashford‘s preference has stayed unchanged throughout the season. There is little evidence his stance on a permanent move to Spain has shifted at all.
