Wolves Set Premium Price for Teenage Prospect
Mateus Mane has attracted attention from Manchester United and Liverpool, but the 18-year-old forward’s current asking price of £50 million ($68m) does not reflect his development stage, according to ex-Wolves striker Don Goodman. The Portuguese U21 international broke through during the 2024-25 season, earning his first start in December before scoring in consecutive matches against West Ham and Everton as 2026 began.
The prospect generated significant buzz among elite clubs. Wolves remain reluctant to sell despite looming relegation, instead demanding inflated fees to discourage potential suitors. Mane signed his first professional contract in summer 2025 with a four-year term, strengthening the club’s negotiating position.
Potential Over Present Value
Goodman told GOAL exclusively: “I think only time will tell. There’s too small a sample size. If I’m a Premier League club, or any other club around the world at this moment, I’m not seeing a £50 million player.”
“What I am seeing is somebody with enormous potential. What I know from inside information is that he’s grounded. He’s got a great attitude. He wants to work hard. He wants to learn. And he wants to go as far in the game as he possibly can. So those are all fantastic commodities for a young player to have.”
The former Molineux frontman acknowledged Mane‘s Premier League experience but raised concerns about an early transfer. “If he stays at Wolves, he’s going to be in the Championship,” Goodman explained. “I have no doubt he’ll have an agent telling him that he can get him a big move this summer. But unless he’s going to go somewhere where he’s going to play week in, week out, there’s no question in my mind he would be better off staying with Wolves and having a season in the Championship where he can excel.”
Tyler Dibling Precedent Raises Red Flags
The cautionary tale of Tyler Dibling looms over Mane‘s transfer deliberations. Dibling caught the eye for relegated Southampton before securing a £35 million ($48m) move to Everton, only to become a peripheral figure for the Toffees.
Goodman drew direct parallels between the two prospects. “That’s an excellent comparison. They are very, very similar. Young 18-year-old lads playing for poor Premier League teams that are struggling week in, week out to get wins on the board. Yet they both shone in poor teams.”
“The expectation would be, give them a move to a better team surrounded by better players and they will become better. And it’s been hard for Tyler Dibling. I actually feel for him a little bit in regard to that maybe it all happened a little bit too soon for him.”
While acknowledging that some young players successfully navigate early transfers, Goodman warned Mane against rushing a move to the wrong environment. “At this moment in time, Tyler Dibling would be a really good comparison to Mateus Mane and what possibly could happen if you ended up going to the wrong club, that wasn’t the right fit for this stage of your career.”
Development Path Forward
Mane will undoubtedly become a regular Premier League player eventually, whether in old gold or another colour. His technical ability and professional attitude make him a legitimate prospect with years of career development ahead. The club’s four-year contract protects Wolves from any forced sale, removing pressure to accept below-market offers this summer.
The teenager faces a critical decision: accept a move to a bigger club and risk the Dibling scenario, or remain at Wolves to dominate Championship football and build a stronger foundation. Follow TipsGG’s coverage as this transfer saga develops.
