Manchester United have confirmed Senne Lammens as their No.1 goalkeeper for the 2026/27 Premier League season, formally closing the chapter on three years of costly uncertainty between the sticks.
Altay Bayindir’s exit made the decision official. “I’ll miss Old Trafford, but this is not goodbye. See you soon, Reds,” he posted on social media after joining Celta Vigo on a season-long loan. His reluctance to sever ties was clear; the club’s willingness was equally so.
How Lammens Earned the Shirt
Bayindir started last season as first choice under Ruben Amorim, who had dropped Andre Onana from his plans. The decision to move on from Onana was defensible. The choice of Bayindir as his successor was not. Bayindir was directly at fault for Arsenal‘s match-winner on the opening day of the campaign, and Amorim persisted with him for two months before handing Lammens his debut in October.
Lammens did not look back. He started every remaining match of the season and established himself as a reliable, consistent presence despite being new to the Premier League. The reaction at Old Trafford when he claimed an aerial cross on his debut captured the mood perfectly: it was celebrated like a goal. At the end of the season, the Premier League named him its transfer of the season.
The Weight of Three Wasted Years
Onana’s tenure now reads as a cautionary tale. His nine errors leading to goals across all competitions were the joint-most of any goalkeeper from the top five European leagues during that period. A significant mistake against Nottingham Forest, a bad error in the Europa League against Viktoria Plzen, and a final appearance blighted by a mistake against Grimsby Town defined his time at the club.
United had positioned Onana as the natural heir to David de Gea. The succession plan failed. De Gea’s legacy at Old Trafford carries some tarnish from his final campaign, but he remained the last dependable, uncontested first-choice goalkeeper at the club before Lammens arrived. The 2021/22 season was the last time United could point to a full campaign with genuine stability in goal.

What Stability Looks Like Going Forward
Lammens enters the new season as the uncontested starter. There will be no rotation dilemmas, no mid-season rethinks. That alone offers United a structural advantage they have lacked for years. Consistency in goal breeds confidence across the entire backline.
His one clear error last term came against Liverpool in May, when he lost possession attempting to play out from the back. Given the credit he had built over months of solid performances, it was a forgivable lapse. As a perfectionist, he will be motivated to eliminate that type of mistake entirely in the coming campaign.
