Manchester City’s descent toward the Championship, or potentially further down the English football pyramid, depends on a factor the Premier League cannot control on its own. The league will need the English Football League’s cooperation to make a multi-season points deduction stick, creating an unexpected snag in what many assumed would be a straightforward sanction once the appeal process concludes.
Manchester City are currently appealing their 114 guilty charges tied to spending breaches. How the club will be sanctioned if that appeal fails remains uncertain, but reports from the Daily Mail point to a points deduction severe enough to guarantee relegation to the Championship. A further deduction the following season, keeping City in the second tier for an additional year, is also under consideration.
EFL Input Required For Extended Sanction
This is where the EFL enters the picture as a necessary collaborator. As a separate governing body, the EFL has no obligation to align with any punishment the Premier League hands down. Sources suggest it is probable the organisation overseeing the lower divisions would agree to extend City’s sanction across multiple seasons rather than limit it to one.
City will also likely face an unprecedented fine tied to manufactured sponsorship deals and other financial breaches spanning 2009 to 2018. The scale of that fine has not been confirmed, but the language used by those close to the case suggests it would set a new benchmark for Premier League discipline.
City Remain Unbeaten Despite The Cloud
Enzo Maresca’s side have responded to the uncertainty with a run of form that borders on defiant. After a shaky start under Pep Guardiola’s successor, City have gone unbeaten in the Premier League, collecting seven wins from seven matches. They sit three points clear of reigning champions Arsenal at the top of the table following a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town at the weekend.
That momentum stalled in Europe. City were beaten 4-2 at home by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, a result that came as Guardiola made his first return to the Etihad since the guilty verdict was announced.
Stripped Titles Still A Possibility
Figures across English football have pushed for a severe response to City’s financial offences. Among the punishments floated is the stripping of the three Premier League titles the club won during the years the breaches occurred.
Reports indicate the Premier League would prefer an automatic relegation straight to League Two, the fourth tier of English football. That option is viewed as far more complicated to execute, reinforcing why cooperation with the EFL has become central to any final decision.
What seems increasingly certain is that City will not be part of the top flight next season regardless of the appeal’s outcome. The remaining question is how long that absence will last, and the EFL’s willingness to extend the sanction will likely decide it.
