Luka Vušković Commits to Tottenham Through 2030 Amid Elite Club Interest

Luka Vušković has reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham Hotspur, dismissing speculation about a permanent move away from the club. The 19-year-old centre-back insisted he will return to the Premier League side after completing his loan spell at Hamburg SV, stating plainly: “After this season, I’ll be a Tottenham player again. I have a contract there until 2030.”

Vušković arrived at the north London club last summer following Tottenham’s agreement with Hajduk Split in September 2023. By late August, the defender joined the Bundesliga on loan, a move that has yielded tangible results on the pitch.

Standout Bundesliga Performance

The Croatian defender has emerged as one of Hamburg’s most consistent performers this season. His numbers reflect a dominant presence in defence:

  • 24 appearances, all as a starter
  • 2,160 total minutes
  • 7.1 duels won per game
  • 9.1 clearances per game
  • 1.2 interceptions per game
  • 4.2 balls recovered per game
  • 0.2 dribbles past per game

His defensive output has drawn attention from multiple top European clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. Last month, his agent Pini Zahavi stated no decisions regarding his future would be made until the season’s conclusion.

Dream of Playing Alongside His Brother

Vušković initially expressed strong interest in extending at Hamburg to play alongside his brother Mario, who is serving a doping ban until November. In October, he described this as his dream. By December, he stated: “It’s my dream to play alongside my brother at HSV. I would give everything for that. Tottenham know that too.”

However, Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa made clear that contractually, extending Vušković’s stay presented insurmountable obstacles. Manager Merlin Polzin acknowledged he dreams of retaining the defender despite the situation appearing “impossible.”

This reality prompted a shift in Vušković’s perspective. He now frames playing with Mario as a long-term objective that could materialise at any point in his career, potentially even during a final chapter at Hajduk Split. “In football, you never know. It could happen next year, or in 10 years,” he explained. “It’s my biggest dream to be on the pitch with him here in Hamburg, or later in Split.”

Defensive Philosophy and Continuous Development

When discussing whether his defending style constitutes “destruction or art,” Vušković revealed a nuanced approach. He separates aggressive, physical defending from intelligent positional work. “If you defend intelligently, you hardly ever have to go directly into a challenge; you focus more on the space where things can get dangerous,” he said. “I’m somewhere in between because I’m not as aggressive as some others, although I’d like to be a bit more so. I’m working on that.”

Vušković has identified specific areas for improvement and is actively addressing them through private coaching. He works on acceleration, a critical asset for modern centre-backs. His timing in defensive situations remains a focus. “I often act on instinct, but some things just take practice,” he acknowledged. “There used to be situations I wanted to anticipate. But sometimes I started too early, and sometimes too late. It’s slowly getting better. This is especially key against fast and skilful strikers.”

Tottenham must secure their Premier League status to present an attractive project to a player regarded among the world’s elite young defenders. Vušković’s commitment to the Spurs project remains resolute despite external interest from continental heavyweights.
