Secure Your Place at the 2027 London Marathon: Complete Ballot Guide

24.04.2026, 05:07

The 2027 TCS London Marathon ballot opened at 9am on Friday, April 24, and closes on Friday, May 1, at 4pm. More than a million runners applied for places in this year’s race, and next year’s competition is expected to draw similar demand. Here’s what you need to know to enter.

How the Ballot Works

Entry into the ballot is completely free and operates as a random draw, similar to the National Lottery. If selected, runners must pay an entry fee of £79.99 to secure their spot. Ballot results will be announced by early July, giving winners several months to prepare for race day.

When and Where the Race Takes Place

The 2027 TCS London Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2027. London Marathon Events is exploring a potential one-off two-day format spanning Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25. If approved, all ballot entrants would automatically enter the draw for both dates, though participants could only run one event. This expansion would significantly increase available places, potentially doubling capacity.

Available Spaces and Entry Routes

More than 59,000 runners are expected to start the 2026 marathon. While many spaces come through the ballot, multiple alternative pathways exist. Runners can secure places by achieving a good for age time, running through a registered charity, or competing for a British Athletics club.

Approximately 6,000 places are reserved for runners meeting good for age standards for their gender. This competitive route eliminates the lottery element for faster runners.

Charity and Club Entry Options

Charities offer guaranteed marathon places in exchange for fundraising commitments. Be aware that minimum fundraising targets can reach several thousand pounds, and failure to meet these goals may prevent race participation. British Athletics club members can also access dedicated entry routes, providing another avenue outside the ballot system.
