Bayern Munich have confirmed the arrival of Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen, marking head coach Vincent Kompany’s second signing of the summer window.
The 29-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year contract that ties him to the German champions until June 2029. He will wear the No.4 shirt—previously worn by Matthijs de Ligt before his 2024 move to Manchester United.
🗣️ “I want to take on responsibility” – Tah’s Ambition
Tah, a seasoned Germany international with 35 caps, leaves Leverkusen after over a decade and more than 400 appearances. Reflecting on the move, he said:
“I’m very happy to be at FC Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together.”
📢 Bayern’s Leadership Reacts to the Signing
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen welcomed Tah, saying:
“As an experienced international and leader, he brings the consistency and quality that will strengthen our defence.”
Sporting director Max Eberl added:
“It’s no secret we’ve tracked Jonathan for some time. He had plenty of offers but chose Bayern, which speaks volumes.”
Christoph Freund emphasized Tah’s character:
“He brings international experience and a leadership mindset. He’s exactly the type of player we need.”
🛠️ Squad Dynamics: What Tah Brings
Having helped Leverkusen complete a historic unbeaten treble in 2023/24, including a Bundesliga title, Tah now joins a Bayern side who reclaimed the league crown by finishing 13 points ahead of Leverkusen in 2024/25.
With Eric Dier’s departure to Monaco, Tah adds depth and experience to a defence that includes Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae, and Hiroki Ito.
📈 Second Summer Signing Under Kompany
The defender becomes Bayern’s second confirmed signing of the summer, following the arrival of teenage midfielder Tom Bischof from Hoffenheim.
With transfer targets and squad reshuffles continuing, Tah’s arrival marks a key moment in Kompany’s early rebuild at Bayern Munich.
As Bayern look to maintain domestic dominance and push further in Europe, Jonathan Tah’s leadership, experience, and composure could be pivotal in Kompany’s plans for the 2025/26 campaign.
