Is Liam Rosenior the Right Choice for Chelsea?

02.01.2026, 11:39

From Hull to Strasbourg: Rosenior’s Rise

Liam Rosenior, the 41-year-old Englishman, has emerged as the leading candidate to become Chelsea’s new manager just 18 months after being sacked by Hull City. His impressive work with French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, another club under Chelsea owners BlueCo, has thrust him into the spotlight. But is he ready for the Premier League?

Rosenior would replace Enzo Maresca, who departed after winning the Club World Cup but clashing with Chelsea’s hierarchy. If appointed, Rosenior would be the fourth of the last five Chelsea managers with Championship experience.

“They will get someone in who is young and easy to manipulate,” said BBC pundit and former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin.

Strasbourg’s Young Guns and Rosenior’s Tactics

At Strasbourg, Rosenior has built a team of young talents, a strategy that aligns well with Chelsea’s youthful squad. Last season, Chelsea fielded the youngest average starting XI in Premier League history (24 years, 36 days). Strasbourg, meanwhile, made headlines in August by fielding an entire team of players born in the 2000s averaging just 20 years and 283 days.

Ben Chilwell, who joined Strasbourg from Chelsea, praised Rosenior’s leadership: “The manager is very good at managing a young dressing room. He wants to win stuff qualify for the Champions League, win the French Cup, win the Conference League.”

Strasbourg currently sit seventh in Ligue 1, matching last season’s finish. They topped their Conference League group, including wins over Crystal Palace and Aberdeen. However, their recent league form has dipped, with just one win in six matches.

Tactical Flexibility and Playing Style

Rosenior has shown tactical versatility, alternating between a 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 formation. Strasbourg play a possession-heavy style, ranking third in Ligue 1 for passes but eighth for passes in the opposition half. They lead the league in through balls (55) but are last in long passes (511) a stark contrast to Chelsea’s 925 long passes this season.

Despite their shot volume (14th in Ligue 1), Strasbourg are clinical, ranking seventh in goals. Club president Marc Keller called Rosenior “very innovative,” noting his clear vision for the team.

From Player to Manager: Rosenior’s Journey

Rosenior had a modest playing career, featuring for Fulham, Reading, Hull, and Brighton. His coaching journey began at Brighton’s under-23s before moving to Derby, where he worked under Phillip Cocu and Wayne Rooney. After Rooney’s departure, Rosenior briefly took charge, stabilizing Derby amid financial turmoil.

His Hull City stint saw him guide the team from relegation trouble to a 15th-place finish, only to be sacked the following season despite nearly reaching the playoffs. Meanwhile, Strasbourg thrived under his leadership, earning European football.

Would Rosenior Fit Chelsea’s Vision?

Chelsea’s recent managerial appointments Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, and Maresca have all clashed with ownership. Nevin warned: “Chelsea want someone who will do what they’re told. Those two things success and control may not be compatible.”

Rosenior has more experience than Maresca but lacks top-tier managerial pedigree. Former striker Dion Dublin praised his work at Strasbourg but questioned whether Chelsea’s owners truly want a top-class manager or just a compliant figure.

As Strasbourg’s president Keller put it: “BlueCo knew him from England, and what he said is exactly what is happening now.”

Only time will tell if Rosenior is the right fit for Chelsea or if this is a gamble too far.
