Haris Tabaković Out of the World Cup After Ankle Fracture

18.05.2026, 05:25

Haris Tabaković, the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team striker, has suffered a serious injury that rules him out of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The 31-year-old fractured a bone in his ankle during the final Bundesliga matchday, leaving his country without one of its most important attacking options on the global stage.

The injury occurred in the 72nd minute of Borussia Mönchengladbach‘s 4-0 victory over Hoffenheim, following a duel with defender Ozan Kabak. Scans confirmed a fractured ankle bone. His leg is currently in a cast and the projected recovery is a minimum of three months. If surgery is required, as doctors have recommended, that timeline extends to six months, making any return before the tournament’s conclusion mathematically impossible.

The timing is especially painful given the form Tabaković carried throughout the season. In the Bundesliga, he contributed 13 goals and 2 assists for Mönchengladbach, and even scored in the same match in which he was injured. Across 10 international appearances for Bosnia and Herzegovina, he has scored 4 goals, with 3 of those arriving in critical World Cup qualifying matches against Romania, Austria, and Italy in the playoff final.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are drawn in a group alongside Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar. Tabaković will not feature in any of those fixtures.

The First Confirmed Traveler, Now the Biggest Absence

Tabaković was the first player publicly confirmed for the Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup squad, an announcement made by coach Sergej Barbarez on German broadcaster ZDF. That distinction underlines how central Tabaković was to Barbarez‘s plans, regularly deployed from the bench as an impact substitute behind Edin Džeko and Ermedin Demirović.

“I am a huge fan of Haris, I love the way he experiences and plays football,” Barbarez said at the time.

Born in Switzerland, Tabaković started his career there and represented Swiss youth sides before committing to Bosnia and Herzegovina at senior level. His club career took him through Young Boys, Grasshoppers, Debrecen, Diósgyőr, Austria Lustenau, Austria Vienna, Hertha, Hoffenheim, and ultimately Borussia Mönchengladbach. Transfermarkt values him at €3 million.

His absence is a significant blow to Bosnia and Herzegovina‘s attacking depth at the tournament. Follow TipsGG for ongoing World Cup squad updates, match previews, and expert betting analysis as the competition approaches.
