Gerrard Advises Salah to Step Back from Controversial Remarks
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has urged Mohamed Salah to retract his recent comments accusing the club of throwing him “under the bus.” Salah’s outburst followed Liverpool‘s Premier League draw at Leeds last Saturday, where he claimed he had been unfairly blamed for the team’s struggles and hinted at a breakdown in his relationship with manager Arne Slot.
The Egypt forward was notably absent from the squad that traveled to Inter Milan for Tuesday’s Champions League victory, though Slot has suggested Salah could return soon. Gerrard, speaking on TNT Sports, labeled Salah’s remarks as “wrong” and advised him to handle the matter privately with the manager.
“He’s obviously really upset he’s not playing, which I respect. A couple of lines about throwing people under the bus – wrong. [He] needs to reverse a little bit away from that, he needs to deal with that with the manager.”
Gerrard drew parallels to Luis Suarez‘s 2013 fallout with then-manager Brendan Rodgers, recalling how the striker was temporarily sidelined before rejoining the squad. “I’ve seen this and I’ve lived it with Suarez when he fell out with Brendan face to face. I’ve been there and done it myself,” Gerrard reflected.

Amid speculation about Salah’s future—fueled by reported interest from Saudi Arabian clubs—the 31-year-old’s form has dipped this season. With just four goals in 13 Premier League appearances, Liverpool sit 10th in the table, a far cry from their recent dominance. Salah, who signed a new contract in April, remains a pivotal figure, having helped secure two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy since his 2017 arrival from Roma.
